Performances Just Sing it! School Shows 2008-2009 Season British Columbia Boys Choir’s 40th Anniversary North Shore Concert Series presenting two Exciting Shows March 1 & May 3, 2009.
British Columbia Boys Choir and Songs, Strings and Steps presents Around the World in 80 Minutes With Special Guest Artists: Songs Strings and Steps and the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra under the direction of Calvin Dyck; the Pacific Mennonite College Chamber Singers, multi instrumentalist, Pepe Danza, Aerial Dance and Acro Academy, Abbotsford Skipping Sensations and much more Sunday, May 3, 2009 3 p.m. It took 80 days for Jules Verne’s characters to traverse this incredible planet in his popular book and movie “Around the World in 80 Days”. On May 3, at the Kay Meek Centre, it will be a record-breaking and breath-taking journey when the internationally acclaimed British Columbia Boys Choir, under the direction of Tony Araujo, in their second of their 40th Anniversary North Shore series, presents an eccentric whirlwind musical voyage Around the World in 80 Minutes. The British Columbia Boys Choir is joined by Abbotsford’s highly popular Songs Strings and Steps production team on a magic carpet made of music, song, dance, gorgeous costumes, visuals, dance and much more. Laughs navigator and artistic director Calvin Dyck, “Theoretically it’s 80 minutes but we may have to stretch it to pack in the program.” And what a brilliant program - right from the moment of lift-off with the opening number A Friend Like Me from the Walt Disney movie Aladdin, played brilliantly by 11-year-old Andrew Dyck in his premier violin solo, and the powerful Explosive written by the dynamic UK group Bond, here performed (with choreography) by the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra. The magic carpet flies on with African Suite sung by the Boys Choir, to France with Panis Angelicus and to Ireland with the passionate and toe-tapping Lord of the Dance. Stops along the way include the Pacific, the Amazon, Europe and Japan, landing back in Canada with Maple Sugar Rag and Frobisher Bay. This is entertainment that provides a global experience while lifting spirits, having the audience fly high, bringing exclamations of surprise and awe – all without leaving a comfortable seat in the Kay Meek Centre. “We wondered how we could get around the world so quickly, like from England to Poland, then we realized that a genie can do it,” explains Calvin Dyck. “A genie just goes ‘poof’ and we are there. Our genie and MC is 13-year-old Victoria Duffield (a really talented dancer and singer - you can see her image on the poster). She will appear in the audience, on the stage - just about anywhere!” Along with an amazing jam-packed program there is a phenomenal line-up of talent that also includes the PMCC Chamber Singers, electrifying percussionist Pepe Danza, the Aerial Dance and Acro Academy, the nationally ranked Abbotsford Skipping Sensations and much more. “The first half is mostly old world music and the second is new world,” says Artistic Director, Calvin Dyck. “One of the really special pieces is the beautiful Bachiana Brasilieras No. 5 Aria by Heitor Villa-Lobos performed by soprano Alison Nystrom and a circle of eight cellos. Another is the Adagio by Albinoni.” At this point, Calvin sings a few bars to help capture the grace of the music – one of the perks of interviewing a musician – the author gets serenaded. “The British Columbia Boys Choir takes on an entirely new experience when they join Pepe Danza for Welcome to the Amazon,” explains Calvin enthusiastically. “Pepe plays about sixty instruments, from drum to flute and even instruments he invented himself, including an eagle feather he has hollowed out. For this segment he will be playing his South American instruments and rhythms.” And expect the Kay Meek Centre to transform momentarily into a jungle along the winding Amazon River. That’s just one of the visual surprises in store for the audience! This is truly a wonderful world filled with music, mystery and majesty. Dare to adventure and experience it! Join the British Columbia Boys Choir and Songs Strings & Steps on a magic carpet ride Around the World in 80 Minutes! Taste the music and the passion then taste the food of nations around the world at a special reception.
