40 Years of Teaching Boys to Sing

BCBC-16The British Columbia Boys Choir celebrates 40 years of teaching boys to sing in 2008. In the past year under the direction of Artistic Director Tony Araujo and Associate Conductor Edette Wilks - over 120 boys from 60 schools and 9 Greater Vancouver communities have participated in our Choir Music Education Programs. The BCBC has an exciting year ahead with concerts in Europe, the United States and British Columbia. The British Columbia Boys Choir is open to boys and young men ages 7 - 24 years that reside in Vancouver's Lower Mainland region which includes 12 cities. There are three Choir Programs: The International Touring Choir, The Town Choir and the SongWave 2008 Boys Honour Choir.

The British Columbia Boys Choir accepts members into both choirs in September and January each year if space is available. Auditions take place in May and September each year. CALL: 1-888-909-8282 Rehearsals are at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in North Vancouver on Wednesdays.

  • International Touring Choir is open to boys ages 10-24 (unchanged and changed voices) with singing experience. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays in North Vancouver for 1.5 hours.  Boys interested in this Choir need to audition by singing two pieces and one of these songs can be O Canada. The Choir will present between 15-20 concerts next year including performances with orchestra, other choirs in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.    Commitment: September 2008 - May 2009.

  • The Town Choir is the training choir for the Touring Choir and it is open to boys ages 8-12 with unchanged voices. Boys interested in joining need to be recommended by their music teacher. The Town Choir will perform 7-8 concerts next year and attend a workshop day filled with singing, games and great food!   Commitment: September 2008 – May 2009; Wednesday 5-6:30 p.m.         

  • SongWave 2008 Choir:
  • The BC Boys Choir will produce SongWave 2008 again this fall for two months from October 22 – December 21, 2008. This is an opportunity for boys to try out singing with the BC Boys Choir!
  • This program is for boys with unchanged voices ages 8-13 who have NOT sung with the BC Boys Choir in the past.
  • Boys must be able to match pitch and must be recommended by their music teachers. Nomination From attached.
  • All SongWave singers must commit to attending a minimum of 6 out of 8 Wednesday rehearsals from 5-6 p.m. and both concerts on December 7 and 21.   The SongWave Choir will sing with the International Touring Choir, the Town Choir and the BCBC Alumni Choir at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts as part of the Choir’s 40th Anniversary Gala Christmas Concert on December 21, 2008.
  • Special 40th Anniversary Fee to participate: $40. It is expected that each family will purchase a minimum of two tickets to the December concerts.
  • Uniform: SongWave Participants will be required to wear black dress pants, black dress shoes and a SongWave shirt will be given to each member to wear at the performance and keep as a souvenir.

BCBC-13 The Touring Choir will tour in Northern BC in April 2008 and to Europe in July 2008 with performances in Italy, France and The Netherlands. All members of the Touring Choir are required to tour with the Choir. Candidates interested in auditioning for the Touring Choir must prepare one unaccompanied piece of music for the audition. Important facts about the BC Boys Choir

  • There are two Choirs: International Touring Choir and The Choristers. Members of the BCBC range in age from 8 to 24 years and reside throughout the Lower Mainland area.

  • Members stay in the Choir an average of six years and some for over ten!

  • Choir Members have received Grade 11 Fine Arts Credit for their participation in the Touring Choir.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE 2008-2009 SEASON: please do not call the school or church offices. ALL calls should be directed through the BCBC Office 1-888-909-8282.

MONDAY:
Rehearsals will take place for Touring Choir closer to concerts on Mondays. The regular day throughout the year is Wednesdays for rehearsals.

WEDNESDAY:

SongWave 2008 Boys Honour Choir: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. – (October 22- December 21, 2008)
The Town Choir: 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Touring Choir: Sopranos & Altos: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Tenors & Basses: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, North Vancouver

Tuition Fees:

The Town Choir: $450 Music Instruction from September 2008 - May 2009.
Touring Choir: $600 Tuition and $600 in Fundraising September 2008 – May 2009.

Tuition Bursaries are limited and are available and awarded based on financial need.
